**We've spent two months calling GLM 5.2 our default coding model, and we're not switching it off for quality. But on price the story has flipped: GLM's mid coding tier now costs roughly four times what Claude charges for the same job.** --- If you've followed this blog you know where we stand. We said GLM 5.1 became our safest coding model. We ran three weeks of head-to-head tests and called GLM 5.2 smarter than Kimi K2.7. On quality we're still Team GLM for the security-sensitive, rule-heavy work this codebase demands. But a blog that only tells you which model writes better code is leaving out half the decision. The other half is the bill. And on the bill, something quiet happened in early 2026 that nobody's spelling out in plain numbers: **Z.ai's GLM Coding Plan got more expensive than Anthropic's Claude plans, the ones that ship Claude Code built in.** That sentence would have sounded absurd a year ago. GLM was the budget challenger, Claude the expensive incumbent. The lines crossed. --- ## A Few Terms First (Because Pricing Pages Are Built to Confuse You) Before the numbers, quick definitions, since the AI pricing pages are designed to confuse: - A **coding plan** is a flat monthly subscription that lets you run a coding model through a tool like Claude Code, OpenCode, or Cursor, instead of paying per token on an API. You pay a fixed price and get a usage allowance. - **Claude Code** is Anthropic's command-line coding agent. It reads your codebase, edits files, runs tests, and ships changes. It's the direct competitor to "GLM Coding" workflows. - **Tokens** are the chunks of text the model reads and writes. A coding session burns a lot of them because the model has to re-read your files to keep context. - A **rate limit** (or usage cap) is the ceiling on how much you can use the plan in a given window, even after you've paid. Many plans advertise "unlimited" while enforcing hidden hourly or weekly caps. Keep that last one in mind. The sticker price is half of what you're paying. --- ## The Price Comparison (July 2026) We pulled these from the live Z.ai and Claude pricing pages. GLM Pro runs about $72 a month (around $50 if you pay yearly). Claude Pro is $17 to $20 a month, and it ships Claude Code as part of the subscription. There's no separate "Claude Code plan" to buy. Read that again. For the tier most individual developers actually buy, GLM charges roughly four times what Anthropic charges, for the same job: an AI coding agent on a monthly subscription. Even GLM's Lite plan (~$18/month) costs about the same as Claude Pro (~$17-20/month). You're paying Claude Pro money for GLM's smallest tier, and the Lite allowance (roughly 80 prompts every five hours) is a fraction of what Claude Pro hands you. If your only question is "how much for a coding agent on a monthly plan," Claude is now the cheaper answer by a wide margin. That's the crossover. --- ## The One Place GLM Still Wins on Sticker Price: The Top Tier To be fair, the comparison flips at the very top. GLM Pro Max is ~$160/month. Claude Max 20x is $200/month. On raw sticker price, GLM's top tier is cheaper. But sticker price isn't value. This is the half the pricing page doesn't advertise. --- ## The Hidden Cost: You Pay More, and You Get Throttled Harder This is the part that pushes it from "pricier" to "pricier and more restrictive," and it's all over the r/ZaiGLM subreddit. GLM Coding plans enforce hard usage ceilings. Users report a cap of roughly 30 million tokens per five-hour window, plus weekly quotas. The complaints are specific: - A thread titled "GLM Coding Plan Max does not allow me to use beyond..." — rate limits block you for the rest of the week once they trigger. - One Pro user reported that 55 million tokens of GLM-5.2 usage ate 27% of their weekly quota in a single burst. - Users describe dropping from three concurrent coding jobs down to one or two during peak hours because the service chokes. - Posts with titles like "Don't buy GLM coding plans" and "the rate limit is making this service nearly unusable" are common. So the Max plan that looks cheaper than Claude Max on paper can lock you out of coding for the rest of the week. You paid for a month and got a few good days. That's not a discount. It's a worse price per hour of actual coding. To be fair, some power users on Max claim to process close to a billion tokens a day, and on raw per-token math GLM can look dirt cheap (figures as low as a fraction of a cent per million tokens get thrown around). Those people run flat-out, off-peak, on lighter models. The average developer on Pro or Lite isn't that user. For them, the caps are the real price. --- ## Why This Happened (Two Forces Crossing in Opposite Directions) The crossover isn't random. Two things moved at once. **1. Z.ai raised prices on February 11, 2026.** The Lite and Max plans took the biggest hits. The Max plan roughly doubled. Older subscribers who joined before February 12 got grandfathered into looser "unlimited weekly usage" terms, which is why you'll see wildly different experiences depending on when someone signed up. Everyone joining now pays the new, higher rates. **2. Anthropic folded Claude Code into its existing subscriptions.** There's no separate "Claude Code" product to buy. Your $20 Claude Pro subscription includes the coding agent. Your Max subscription includes it with a bigger allowance. Anthropic didn't launch a new expensive coding plan. It gave the coding agent away inside the plan millions of people already had. GLM went up. Claude's coding tool effectively went down to "included." The lines crossed. --- ## How This Fits With Everything Else We've Written Let's square this with what we've said before, because we stand by it. GLM 5.2 is still our pick on quality for the work this codebase does. It listens to instructions, it respects our Svelte 5 and Elixir conventions, it catches the security regressions that GPT 5.x keeps reintroducing, and it produces code that compiles on the first pass more often than the alternatives. None of that changed in the last two months. What changed is the price of the subscription, which is a separate axis from model quality. A model can be the best in the world at writing code and still be priced in a way that doesn't make sense for your budget. Those two facts coexist. We're not retracting the quality praise. We're adding a price warning every honest comparison has to include. If you came here from our GLM-5.2-vs-Kimi post expecting "switch off GLM," that's not what this is. What this is: a warning that the budget story GLM was famous for isn't true anymore. --- ## What We're Actually Doing About It Three practical answers. **If you're a solo developer buying your first coding plan.** The default recommendation has flipped. Start with Claude Pro at $20/month. You get Claude Code, you get a generous allowance, and you keep around $50 a month that GLM Pro would have taken. Only move to a GLM plan if you specifically need GLM's behavior on a task Claude handles poorly. **If you're a power user who actually needs the top tier.** Compare GLM Pro Max ($160) against Claude Max 20x ($200). On sticker price GLM wins. But budget for the caps: if your week typically gets throttled by Thursday, your real cost per coding hour is higher than the sticker suggests. Run a single week on both and measure how much usable coding time you actually got. **If you're us.** We keep GLM 5.2 for the security-critical and convention-heavy work where its quality saves us review time. We route more of the routine, high-volume coding through Claude Code on a Max plan, because the math there is now clearly better. Our stack is no longer "GLM everywhere." It's "GLM where quality matters most, Claude Code where volume and price matter most." --- ## What We Still Don't Know Pricing in this market moves every few weeks. The numbers in this post are accurate as of late July 2026, pulled from live pricing pages. By the time you read this, one of three things may have happened: - Z.ai may have run another promotion or adjusted the February rates. - Anthropic may have restructured the Max tiers or changed what Claude Code includes. - A new tier may exist on either side that shifts the comparison again. We also don't have clean numbers on effective cost per useful coding hour, which is the metric that actually matters. Sticker price is easy to compare. "How much real, unthrottled, productive coding did I get for my monthly fee" is much harder, and it depends on your codebase size, your model, and the time of day you work. The Reddit reports suggest GLM's caps bite hard for many users, but we haven't run a controlled week-on-both test for price-per-hour yet.
